Courts often favored men in custody battles, and banks frequently refused loans or accounts to single women. Magazines like Ladies’ Home Journal painted divorce as scandalous, reinforcing patriarchal norms. The cultural stigma kept countless women in constrained, unsatisfying roles, unable to pursue new opportunities for themselves.
