In the 1950s, women were expected to embody the “angel in the house” ideal — selfless, nurturing, and devoted to family. Popular magazines and television shows like Father Knows Best and Leave It to Beaver reinforced this image, presenting women as cheerful homemakers who existed to support husbands and children.

This cultural script left little room for individuality. Women who aspired to careers or independence were often criticized as unfeminine. The expectation of constant self-sacrifice kept many women trapped in roles that prioritized patriarchal ideals over personal fulfillment or equality.
