The Life of American Hero and Old Hollywood Icon Audie Murphy

Audie initially resisted playing himself in Universal’s 1955 adaptation of To Hell and Back. He reportedly believed an older, more established actor should portray him, but the studio knew audiences wanted the real soldier on screen.

The film recreated his wartime service, forcing him to revisit experiences and losses that still troubled him. To Hell and Back became a huge commercial success and remained Universal’s highest-grossing film until Jaws surpassed it in 1975. Its impact soon extended beyond the box office.
