Before KISS made him famous, he studied education and graduated from Richmond College in 1970. That academic background made him one of the more formally educated figures in the future KISS circle, even though his later public image would lean toward shock, spectacle, and business bravado.

The degree also showed that his path to rock stardom was not simple or automatic. He was not only chasing music in those years; he was preparing for a conventional career, too. For a short time, the classroom seemed more realistic than the stage.
