#36: Massachusetts
Jobs Gained: 5.3%
Jobs Lost: 5.9%
Massachusetts has a high-skill economy, so new jobs can come from health care, biotech, education, finance, tech, research, and professional services. Boston and the surrounding area help keep the state important for hospitals, universities, startups, and specialized work.

But jobs were disappearing faster than they were being created here. High housing costs, expensive office space, business costs, and slower hiring in tech or professional fields can all weigh on employers. Massachusetts still has strong industries, but this quarter leaned negative.
