#7: California
Jobs Gained: 6.2%
Jobs Lost: 6.0%
California’s margin was small, but in a state this large, even a slight lead can mean a lot of jobs. New work often comes from technology, health care, entertainment, clean energy, trade, logistics, agriculture, and the many service businesses that support its huge population.

However, California loses plenty of jobs too. High costs, expensive housing, business expenses, layoffs in tech and media, and companies shifting some work elsewhere can all play a role. So while jobs are still being created, the state’s size also means a lot of jobs disappear at the same time.
